Tree Care Tips for Winter

Winter can be a tough time for trees, with harsh winds, freezing temperatures, and heavy snow all posing potential threats. But with a little TLC, you can help your trees weather the storm and emerge healthy and vibrant in the spring. Here are some essential winter tree care tips:

1. Water Deeply (Before the Ground Freezes)

Though it may seem counterintuitive, winter watering is crucial, especially for evergreens and newly planted trees. Why? Because winter winds and sun can dry out trees, a process called desiccation. Water deeply before the ground freezes to ensure your trees have adequate moisture reserves. If you experience a winter thaw, and the ground isn't frozen, give your trees another good drink.

2. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch!

A thick layer of mulch (3-4 inches) acts like a cozy blanket for your tree's roots. It helps insulate the soil, regulate temperature, and retain moisture. Just be sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

3. Protect Against Critters

Hungry rodents and rabbits may gnaw on tree bark during winter. Protect young trees by wrapping their trunks with our Miracle Tube Tree Grow tubes or our Tree Pro Protectors.

4. Careful with the Salt

While de-icing salts are essential for safe walkways, they can be harmful to trees. Try to keep salt away from the root zones of your trees, and consider using alternative de-icing products like calcium chloride or sand.

5. Prune at the Right Time

Late winter, when trees are dormant, is generally the best time for pruning. This allows you to easily see the tree's structure and remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches.

6. Provide Support for Young Trees

Young trees can be vulnerable to strong winds and heavy snow. Consider staking them for support, but be sure to use proper staking techniques to avoid damaging the trunk.

7. Inspect for Pests and Diseases

Winter is a good time to inspect your trees for signs of pests or diseases. Look for unusual growths, discoloration, or insect activity. If you notice anything concerning, consult a certified arborist.

8. Be Gentle with Snow Removal

When removing snow from branches, be gentle. Avoid shaking or hitting branches, as this can cause them to break, especially when they are frozen and brittle. Gently brush off heavy snow with a broom or rake.

9. Wrap Thin-Barked Trees

Trees with thin bark, like young maples and fruit trees, can suffer from sunscald (winter bark splitting). Wrap their trunks with tree wrap or burlap to protect them from temperature fluctuations.

10. Don't Forget About Evergreens

Evergreens continue to lose moisture through their needles throughout the winter. Consider applying an anti-desiccant spray to help them retain moisture, especially in windy or exposed locations.

By following these winter tree care tips, you can help your trees stay healthy and resilient throughout the cold season and ensure they thrive for years to come.
