Timber Select Hybrid Butternut Seedlings are sourced from an orchard of grafted hybrid and pure butternut trees, approximately 50:50 (half pure and half hybrid clones) selected for high butternut canker disease resistance in screening trials at Purdue. The hybrids contain Japanese walnut (J. ailantifolia) which add and enhance the limited resistance of pure butternut.  Our hybrid selections are largely ¾ J. cinerea and ¼ J. ailantifolia determined through DNA and morphological analyses.  Our selection goals are butternut canker resistance, high resemblance to butternut timber type, and those that produce nuts similar to pure butternut. From a variety of studies, we have found these complex hybrids fulfill the same ecological benefits as pure butternut.
